At first glance this sounds very exciting - a study to develop more practical and cost-effective methods of managing chronic diarrhea in dogs. We all like practical and affordable options for problems. At second glance, I got wondering.

Can there really be quick and easy solution for chronic diarrhea?

Having had a dog with IBD which went undiagnosed for five years, there certainly was no quick fix. There wasn't even a quick diagnosis. And which diarrhea? Large or small intestine? Either of those has its own set of potential causes.

The Veterinary Practice News article goes into very little specifics.

Of course, there is a difference between a cure and management.

To me, though, the best management IS a cure. Even though management can be necessary, particularly when the cause is known and cannot be done away with. Aiming for a cure is always the best approach if at all possible, no matter how hard and rough a road that might be.

I went to the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine website to find more information.

I was glad to see that the study will include protocols for diagnosis. Because treating without a good diagnosis is like throwing spaghetti against the wall to see what sticks.

Having some reasonable, effective protocols for diagnosing chronic diarrhea would be a godsend. It would save a lot of wandering in the dark.

Chronic diarrhea is one of the most ambiguous symptoms.

Sometimes it is caused by a problem in the gut itself and even then figuring out what is really going on isn't always straightforward. Some issues are notoriously hard to diagnose. And there are causes of chronic diarrhea which have nothing to do with the gut itself whatsoever.

I'll be curious what insights the study brings.
